The purpose of Eurma C. Hayes Center, Inc. is to form an agency whose goals are to develop, maintain, enhance, coordinate, and/or promote human care, educational and social activities directed at furthering the well being and development of the Carbondale, IL community, in general, and the residents of the Northeast and Southeast sectors (Tatum and Lake Heights) sectors of Carbondale, in particular. We focus on being instrumental in promoting a better understanding of community development and unity.
Model Cities Supplemental funds and a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development supported the construction of the Multi-Purpose Service Center in Northeast Carbondale, IL, which opened in June, 1974. The facility was dedicated in memory of Eurma C. Hayes, a beloved resident and social justice activist of Northeast Carbondale.
The purpose of the facility was to improve the accessibility and coordination of social services, daycare/preschool, adult education and healthcare services and programs.
We offer various programs that include:
- Carbondale Chapter of the NAACP
- Early Childhood Development Center (Southern Illinois Early Childhood Development Center)
- ECHCI – (Co-sponsor programs with other civic organizations and churches)
